I will:

Fully seal the chimney to stop any soot or debris entering the room.
Perform a thorough chimney sweep removing blockages, e.g. soot, bird’s nests & leaves.
Regular chimney sweeping is important:
To prevent chimney fires, which can lead to extensive property damage.
To ensure thorough combustion, and prevent the risk of dangerous fume emissions.
To prevent damage to carpets and furnishings caused by falls of loose soot.
Recommended frequency of sweeping:
Smokeless fuel - once per year
Coal - Twice per year
Wood - Quarterly (when in use)
Gas - Once per year (if designed for sweeping)
Oil - Once per year
